A Fall Day of Golf at Highlands in Missoula

October 8, 2025. Missoula, Montana.

We arrived in the wonderful city of Missoula. The town is ablaze with the beauty of fall colors, and the weather is perfect for a round of golf. We chose to play at Highlands Golf Course and were rewarded with a wonderful experience.

The Highlands Golf Club in Missoula, Montana, is a semi-private course known for its challenging play and astounding views of the Missoula Valley, as it’s situated high up in the South Hills. It is a nine-hole course that you play twice to complete an 18-hole round.

We were the first ones out on the course. The chief attendant warmly welcomed us, collected our green fees, and walked us out onto the course, providing a wealth of information on the track and the area in general. He warned us to be on the lookout for his son, who was presently mowing the greens.

The course was in excellent condition, and the greens were immaculate and healthy. Since the course is on the side of the mountain, you initially hit downhill only to come uphill on the last few holes. The greens rolled true to the incline imposed by the mountainous terrain and presented a unique challenge.

The course is crowded with deer who have obviously become accustomed to the players, and we found ourselves hitting the ball while a deer stood just a few feet away.

On our way out, we asked the attendant to recommend a lunch establishment. He sent us down just a couple of miles to Tagliare Delicatessen, where we had wonderful gourmet sandwiches. It was a great day of golf and a welcome reprieve from the arduous cross-country drive.

If you are in Missoula, do not miss Highlands Golf Course and a sandwich at Tagliare.
