April 27, 2025. Brunswick, Georgia.
Today we worshiped with our best friend, Ernie Knight, at Bible Baptist Church in Brunswick, Georgia. I consider Ernie to be our best friend, and we have known him for over 20 years. I came to know Ernie when he sought my services as a flight instructor. I taught him to fly, and through the years he has progressed as a pilot, earning his private pilot certificate, instrument rating, and multi-engine rating, amassing over 2,000 hours of flight time in the process. Ernie has many passions in his life, but nothing is more dear to him than leading others to the salvation offered by our Lord Jesus Christ and helping anyone in need. It is a treasure to have him as a friend.
Ernie has led Bible School on Sundays for over 30 years, and I was not going to miss his teaching. Today, he taught from the Gospel of John, chapter 19. John’s account of the crucifixion of Jesus and His words to us from the cross. Ernie emphasized the importance of the last three words Jesus uttered, “It is finished.” He explained the significance of these words for us: that all of our sins had been forgiven, that nothing would separate us from His love, and that no further sacrifice was needed for our salvation other than Him, the perfect sacrifice.
Ernie and I would not have a complete day of fellowship if we did not go flying, and the opportunity was great since he had to fly to Marsh Harbor, Bahamas, to pick up family. We boarded his new Cessna 421 Golden Eagle, and a couple of hours later we were on final approach. We picked up our passengers and returned to St. Simons in time for dinner. It was an incredible Sunday of fellowship with Ernie. Coming to his home is like getting to spend time with the brother I never had. I pray to be able to continue to have Sundays of worship and flying with Ernie for many years to come.
