April 3, 2025. Washington, D.C.
Today we played at the East Potomac Golf Links, located on East Potomac Park on Hains Point Island in Washington, D.C. The course is managed by the National Links Trust (NLT) under a lease from the United States National Park Service. The NLT has committed to a multi-year, multi-million-dollar investment in the restoration and rehabilitation of the three public golf facilities in Washington, D.C. In addition to course and property improvements, the NLT maintains affordable green fees, develop and support youth golf and educational programs, and honor the rich history of the sport in the area.
The course, with its island location, is bordered by the Potomac River to the southeast and the Washington Channel to the northwest. While the surrounding water doesn’t come into play on the course, it does little to shield golfers from the winds, which certainly affect the game. The roar of commercial jet engines departing from Reagan National Airport was ever-present, especially on the back nine. We also saw Marine One and Marine Two fly over us a couple of times. The Washington National Memorial is visible from just about anywhere in the course. Another unique feature during our visit was the cherry blossoms that surrounded the course. The wind blowing their petals across the fairways and greens was truly a sight to behold.
The course was in decent shape, though the greens were being aerated, which made putting more challenging than usual. We decided to walk the course, and we feel this is the best way to experience it. They offer very nice push carts for rent at $7, and for those who need them, riding carts are also available. With green fees of $33, the experience is well worth it. Our scores reflect the course’s difficulty: I shot a 95, Junior shot a 100, and Barbara scored a 121—some of our best scores this year.
